LOW-MELTING GLASSES IN THE PbO–B2O3–SiO2 SYSTEM

PDF

Abstract

Lead borosilicate glasses are a versatile class of materials with a wide range of potential applications. Their unique properties, such as low melting point, high refractive index, and excellent chemical durability, stem from their unique composition and structure. The addition of lead oxide to borosilicate glass reduces its melting point and increases its refractive index. This makes lead-borosilicate glasses ideal for use in optics and electronics. Lead borosilicate glasses have also been used as nuclear waste immobilization matrices due to their high density and chemical resistance. A comprehensive comprehension of the interplay between composition, structure, and properties in low-melting lead borosilicate glasses empowers scientists and engineers to fine-tune their performance for specific applications, thereby broadening their potential utility. In light of this, our study was motivated by a desire to unravel the influence of chemical composition on the thermal properties, specifically the glass transition temperature and melting temperature, of lead borosilicate glasses.
