THE ROLE OF NON-ABLATIVE LASER PHOTOTHERMOLYSIS IN BIOMODIFICATION OF THE PERIIMPLANT GINGIVA
Abstract
The value of sufficient width of the keratinized gingiva (KG) around dental implants is still a matter of debate. According to numerous clinical studies, insufficient KG width (less than 2 mm) is associated with a higher risk of recession, peri-implantitis, mucositis and a higher level of marginal bone loss. Although there is no consensus on this issue, an increasing number of researchers recommend creating a KG zone around the implant with a thickness of at least 2 mm. The thickness of the gingiva is also an important factor in the stability of the level of marginal bone tissue and mucous membrane. The thin mucous membrane around the implant is associated with higher marginal oblique resorption. Each method of increasing the width of the KG is associated with additional traumatization and a certain risk of complications. The success of the manipulation directly depends on the clinical experience of the surgeon. This requires the development of less invasive and simpler methods to achieve the optimal phenotype and width of the KG around dental implants [1, 2].
