ANALYSIS OF THE APPLICATION STATUS OF AERODYNAMIC DRAG REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY IN TRANSPORTATION
Abstract
The development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can improve traffic efficiency and reduce energy consumption. One solution is to reduce the distance between vehicles and allow them to travel in a longitudinal row, which is known as platooning vehicles[1]. Platooning vehicles are tightly arranged in a row to reduce air resistance. Due to the fact that a quarter of the energy consumed by vehicles during operation is related to aerodynamic drag [2], the method of using platooning vehicles can reduce fuel consumption. This phenomenon is also common in other areas, such as cycling [3], bird flight [4], and racing [5], where plateoning is applied to optimize aerodynamic performance and reduce energy consumption.
