INTERNAL COHERENCE AND SYMBOLISM IN RUMI’S MATHNAWI IN NICHOLSON’S INTERPRETATION

Abstract

This article examines the interpretative framework developed by Reynold A. Nicholson in his study of Jalaluddin Rumi’s Mathnawi, with particular attention to its internal coherence and symbolic discourse. By integrating philological, hermeneutic, and comparative literary approaches, Nicholson establishes the Mathnawi as a coherent poetic-philosophical system rather than a loosely structured collection of narratives. The study argues that his methodology preserves the semantic and symbolic complexity of the text while providing a framework for understanding its multi-layered narrative structure.
