Abstract

September 1913 appeared tranquil for Central Asia, yet delicate political maneuvers were unfolding behind the scenes. Commissioned by the Institut de France and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, the renowned French Iranologist and leading expert in the Sogdian language, linguist Robert Gauthiot (1876 – 1916), arrived in Samarkand.
