ARKHIP KUINDZHI: LIGHT, NATURE, AND THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING

Abstract

The study examines the artistic legacy of Arkhip Kuindzhi as a significant stage in the development of landscape painting. It explores how the artist transformed the traditional depiction of nature into a medium of emotional and philosophical expression. Particular attention is given to Kuindzhi’s innovative treatment of light and color, especially his creation of the effect of “inner radiance,” which became a defining feature of his style. The research traces his evolution from academic realism to a more generalized and symbolic visual language, where nature functions as a dynamic and spiritualized space. The paper also highlights the influence of his early experience as a photo retoucher on his understanding of tonal contrast and illumination. Kuindzhi’s landscapes are analyzed as complex visual structures that combine realism, emotional depth, and poetic imagery. Furthermore, the study considers his role as an educator, his impact on contemporaries, and his contribution to the development of 20th-century artistic experiments with light and color. The findings demonstrate that Kuindzhi expanded the boundaries of landscape painting by redefining nature as a bearer of philosophical meaning and aesthetic experience.
