SOME BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DESERT WHEATGRASS — AGROPYRON DESERTORUM (FISCH. EX LINK.) SCHULT

PDF

Abstract

Species belonging to the genus wheatgrass ( Agropyron sp.) are perennial herbaceous plants of the grass family — Poaceae. Species of this genus are naturally distributed across Eurasia and North Africa, with some species having been introduced into North America, Australia, and New Zealand. In nature, wheatgrass species grow wild in desert and forest-steppe zones. Wheatgrass species are not particular about soil type and grow well even on sandy and stony soils. As a valuable forage plant, wheatgrass has been cultivated since the 20th century. It has been established that 100 kg of wheatgrass hay contains 48.5 feed units and 6.7 kg of digestible protein, while at the heading stage, 100 kg of plant mass contains 22.5 feed units and 4.0 kg of digestible protein. Based on spike structure, wheatgrass species are divided into narrow -spiked and broad-spiked forms.
