Abstract

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the population living in the Bukhara oasis, along the Amu Darya, and in the humid areas of the Fergana Valley was regularly affected by widespread diseases such as malaria, dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease), and cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Medical practice was largely limited to the individual treatment of patients, while there was no systematic scientific approach to addressing the underlying causes of these diseases, including their sources of transmission, vectors, and natural foci. It was precisely this historical necessity that laid the foundation for the emergence of medical parasitology as an independent field of scientific research in Central Asia. The official history of the institute dates back to December 1923.
