THE LANDSCAPE APPROACH AS A SCIENTIFIC-THEORETICAL BASIS FOR STUDYING LAND COVER AND SETTLEMENT PATTERNS: THE CASE OF MIRZACHUL
Abstract
Land cover and settlement change in arid regions rarely occurs as a self - contained process: it unfolds within, and is constrained by, the internal structure of the landscapes in which it occurs. The landscape approach treats natural-geographic objects as an integrated system, analyzed through internal structure, component interaction and sensitivity to anthropogenic pressure, and has proven the most effective theoretical basis for nature conservation and geoecological problem - solving. Yet remote sensing - and GIS-based land use and land cover (LULC) studies frequently treat change as a standalone phenomenon, detached from landscape structure — a gap that is especially problematic in heavily irrigated arid regions such as Mirzachul. This thesis synthesizes the theoretical foundations of the landscape approach, from its historical origins to its geosystem-based formalization and anthropogenic-landscape classification, to establish why it constitutes the appropriate methodological basis for analyzing LULC and settlement dynamics in Mirzachul. 2.Author Biography
