COGNITIVE AND METACOGNITIVE MECHANISMS OF INTERPRETING TURKISH-LANGUAGE POETIC TEXTS BY PHILOLOGY STUDENTS

PDF

Abstract

Reading a poetic text in a foreign language cannot be reduced to lexical and grammatical decoding. In the dissertation, reading is treated as an active analytic - synthetic activity in which the reader establishes semantic links, integrates linguistic and extralinguistic information, and moves from the explicit content of a text to its implicit, emotive-evaluative, and conceptual meanings. This understanding is consistent with approaches that describe reading as purposeful processing of written discourse and stress the interaction of perceptual, linguistic, and higher-order comprehension processes. For philology students, this movement is especially important because Turkish poetry concentrates culturally marked vocabulary, symbols, tropes, precedent phenomena, and meanings that cannot always be reconstructed from the literal wording alone. Therefore, interpretation requires both cognitive operations and conscious regulation of these operations.
