MORPHO-BIOLOGICAL PROFILING AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF CHICKPEA (CICER ARIETINUM L.) GERMPLASM UNDER THE ARID CONDITIONS OF KARAKALPAKSTAN
Abstract
Under the escalating pressure of global climate change, expanding worldwide water deficits, and rapid population growth, guaranteeing food security and supplying populations with high-quality plant-based protein stand among the most critical challenges facing contemporary agricultural biology. Chickpea ( Cicer arietinum L.), ranked as the third most vital food legume globally following common bean and field pea, is cultivated across vast expanses in over 50 countries due to its high protein content (20–30%), rich amino acid profile, and profound capacity to enhance soil fertility by biological nitrogen fixation via symbiotic root nodule bacteria (FAOSTAT, 2025). Developing targeted breeding programs, assessing biochemical adaptability to abiotic stressors, and identifying high-yielding genotypes are of strategic importance, particularly within moisture-limited and hyper-arid production environments [Varshney et al., 2021; Jha et al., 2022; Jha et al., 2026].References
