PHYSIOLOGICAL TOLERANCE AND ADAPTIVE RESPONSES OF SUNFLOWER (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS L.) CULTIVARS TO WATER DEFICIT

PDF

Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the world’s major oilseed crops and an important source of edible vegetable oil. Its nutritional and industrial value, together with its adaptability to different soil and climatic conditions, has increased interest in developing productive cultivars that are resistant to environmental stresses. This is particularly important in arid regions, where limited water resources directly affect crop growth and yield. Sunflower is relatively well adapted to drought because its developed root system allows the plant to absorb water from deeper soil layers. Nevertheless, severe or prolonged water deficit restricts vegetative growth, reduces above-ground biomass, and limits the formation of assimilates required for reproductive development. The extent of damage depends on the intensity and duration of water stress, the developmental stage at which it occurs, and the biological characteristics of the cultivar. Sunflower cultivars are especially sensitive to water deficit during budding and flowering.
