ROOT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IN SOYBEAN VARIETIES GROWN UNDER WATER-SAVING IRRIGATION METHODS

PDF

Abstract

Water scarcity is one of the major environmental constraints limiting agricultural production, particularly in regions where crop cultivation depends strongly on irrigation. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is sensitive to inadequate water availability, and drought can substantially affect plant growth, physiological processes, and yield formation. Under water deficit, the root system becomes particularly important because it determines the plant’s ability to explore the soil profile and acquire available water and nutrients. The root system is a key component of soybean adaptation to water deficit. Root length, root biomass, root volume, root branching, and root-to-shoot ratio are among the important traits associated with water acquisition and drought adaptation. Xiong et al. (2021) reported that root system architecture plays a central role in the acquisition of water and nutrients under water-limited conditions and emphasized the importance of root traits in improving soybean drought tolerance.
