THE ECOLOGICAL AND LAND-IMPROVEMENT STATUS OF THE SOIL COVER IN THE REPUBLIC OF KARAKALPAKSTAN: TRENDS IN DEGRADATION PROCESSES AND THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR ITS REMEDIATION

PDF

Abstract

In the context of ongoing anthropogenic pressure, a systematic deterioration in the ecological and land-reclamation status of the natural environment in the Republic of Karakalpakstan has been observed, with the pedosphere representing the most vulnerable component of the landscape. The disruption of the hydrological balance and the increase in the level of mineralised groundwater are attributable to the irrational land reclamation practices that have resulted in an unjustified increase in irrigation rates. This process is a key catalyst for large-scale halogenation (salinisation) of soil horizons. In view of the aforementioned points, it is imperative to undertake a comprehensive theoretical and empirical investigation into the ecological condition of soils, a matter that has become of paramount and strategically significant importance in the domain of contemporary soil science.
