THE ROLE OF WILDLIFE IN THE SPREAD OF TRANSBOUNDARY ANIMAL DISEASES: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RISKS AND BIOSECURITY MEASURES
Abstract
Transboundary animal diseases remain among the most important infectious threats to contemporary livestock production because they can spread rapidly across administrative and national borders, disrupt production and supply chains, trigger restrictions on animal movements and international trade, and require substantial expenditure on emergency disease-control measures. The epidemiology of transboundary diseases can no longer be explained solely by the movement of domestic animals and animal products. Globalization, landscape transformation, wildlife migration, human mobility, transport networks, and the environmental persistence of pathogens create interconnected pathways through which infection can reach previously unaffected areas. The wildlife –livestock interface is therefore increasingly recognized as a critical component of preparedness and disease control, particularly where wild and domestic populations share space, water, feed resources, grazing areas, vectors, or contaminated environmental substrates–.Author Biography
